It is just a customized version of the Mazda name.

In 1992, Mazda introduced this symbol for its export market. It represents a flame in a sun,
and stands for heartfelt compassion.

Because their symbol resembled one belonging to a French company, Mazda slightly altered it.
They simply rounded off the diamond inside the ellipse, which also made it look more like a flame.

Mazda presented this new symbol in 1997. It is a V in the center of an M, and represents creativity,
